Compassion Focused Therapy

As psychologists, we’re aware how easy it can be for women to put everyone else first and end up feeling anxious, overwhelmed, resentful, self-critical or shut-down and depressed. This can happen easily as we travel through different life stages which hold a host of explicit and invisible expectations.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) offers a de-shaming, evidence-based way to understand our minds and bodies and quiet the inner critic, build emotional resilience, and reconnect with our strengths.

What is Compassion Focused Therapy?

CFT draws on psychology, neuroscience, and mindfulness to help you develop a kinder relationship with yourself and others (which doesn’t always look as you might expect).  Instead of trying to “push through” distress, you’ll learn skills that soothe  your nervous system, calm

shame, and cultivate warmth and understanding, and consider actions to reduce distress – just as you would for someone you care about.

  • Focus on Self-Compassion:  While many therapies emphasise changing thoughts or behaviours, CFT puts compassion at the centre, we will help you learn how to shift from a self-critical mentality to self-supportive mentality.
  • Understanding Your Three Emotion Systems:  We will support you learn how our minds naturally rely on drive, threat, and soothing systems – and how these can become unbalanced.  We will help you build your soothing system to feel calmer,  more balanced and grounded.
  • Practical, Experiential Tools:  CFT uses guided imagery, mindfulness practices, and compassionate exercises to build new emotional habits, not just insights.
  • Rooted in Science, Delivered with Warmth:  CFT blends evolutionary psychology with kindness-based practices, making it especially effective for shame, anxiety, or perfectionism.

At Una Psychology we offer you a caring therapeutic space where you can explore and understand your experiences and needs, heal from past hurts, and grow a more compassionate relationship with yourself.  Whether you’re facing stress, low self-worth, meltdowns or shut-downs or long-standing emotional struggles, Compassion Focused Therapy can help you feel more grounded, empowered, and cared for.
